Do you have a dog? It is easy to miss that these dogs are susceptible to all kinds of ‘dog-only’ diseases, but as a dog owner you want to make sure that they stay healthy.
Keeping abreast of all potentially harmfully dog diseases makes it so you are prepared and this one is no exception. Have you heard of the MRD1 Mutation? The Wisdom Panel is a great resource for dog parents to make sure they are in the know about their pets’ history and the potential for the mutation.
Multi-Drug Resistance 1 other known as MDR1 is a genetic mutation found in some herding and sighthound breeds, as well as many mixed-breed dogs. The MDR1 gene is responsible for production of a protein called P-glycoprotein. The P-glycoprotein molecule is a drug transport pump that plays an important role in limiting drug absorption and distribution (particularly to the brain) and enhancing the excretion/elimination of many drugs used in dogs. Some of the dog breeds that are affected by this mutation:
- Australian Shepherd 50%
- Australian Shepherd, Mini 50%
- Border Collie < 5%
- Collie 70 %
- English Shepherd 15 %
- German Shepherd 10 %
- Herding Breed Cross 10 %
- Long-haired Whippet 65 %
- McNab 30 %
- Mixed Breed 5 %
- Old English Sheepdog 5 %
- Shetland Sheepdog 15 %
- Silken Windhound 30 %
DRUGS AFFECTED BY THE MDR1 MUTATION:
If you have a dog that had the MDR1 gene it effects their ability to limit the absorption and distribution of many drugs. These dogs are also slower to eliminate drugs from the body that are transported by P-glycoprotein. Some dogs with MDR1 will have a severe adverse reactions to some common drugs.
That is exactly why it is important to have your pup swabbed.
The test is very simple and you can do it right at home. It consists of two swabs that the owner rubs between the gum and the cheek for 15 seconds to collect skin cells for DNA extraction. You just need to send it back in the prepaid package and you will get the results in 2-3 weeks.
Wisdom Panel will be at the following events to share more information about Wisdom Panel® 3.0 and educate on the benefits of Canine DNA testing:
The next check in is on December 5: Holiday Pet Festival in Scottsdale, AZ which has a swabbing. Get more information here
For all events that allow dogs, consumers can swab onsite at event for a discounted price of $39.99. For those wanting to take home a kit, they can be purchased for the discounted price of $49.99 (MSRP $84.99).
