Not only is honey one of the oldest sweeteners on earth, it is also one of the oldest treatments for a variety of ailments. Whether you add it to drinks and foods or concoct your own homemade cure, honey is widely know to benefit your body in many ways.
However, to reap the best benefits from your honey a few rules apply; It must be “real” honey, in that it must contain pollen.
According to Food Safety News a study that was performed for them showed that the majority of honey sold in the U.S has had the pollen filtered out- meaning it isn’t true honey. Secondly, the best honey to buy is local, your local honey contains pollen that is native to your area, thus it is believed to help you build an immunity to local pollens, a major plus whether you suffer from severe allergies or not. Builds your immune system, the antioxidants it contains can combat free radicals and other harmful chemical agents. (The darker the honey the greater the antioxidants.) But if you do get sick, there are great homemade remedies you can create with honey- one of the most popular and I believe effective is a combination of honey and cinnamon. This is great for a cough or any throat irritants.
Homemade Honey Cinnamon Cough Syrup– Mix 1 Tbsp. Honey with ½ tsp. Cinnamon, take as you would a store bought cough syrup.
If honey alone does so many great things, the honey and cinnamon together pack a punch that is amazing. The combination of honey and cinnamon are widely believed to be helpful in curing colds, reducing insulin- great for diabetics (check with your doctor), relieving arthritis, upset stomach, flu symptoms, bladder infections, gas and fatigue.
Daily Honey and Cinnamon Drink– Mix 2 Tbsp honey, 1 tsp. Cinnamon, and 8 oz hot water. Drink like a tea.
Gives you energy! It is a great source of natural carbohydrates and many athletes use it to increase endurance and reduce muscle fatigue.

Honey Hair Conditioner– Combine ¼ cup olive oil to ½ cup honey, massage through hair thoroughly, leave on for 20- 30 minutes. Rinse and wash as usual.
Honey Mask– Start by washing all makeup and creams off your face. Lay a washcloth soaked in hot water over your face to open your pores. Combine ½ cup of honey and ¼ cup of plain yogurt, 2-3 drops of essential oil like; lavender, orange, or rose. Warm in microwave for 20-25 seconds, you want it barely warm, not hot, so take care with temperature. Apply to face and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Wash it off and enjoy your glow!
