Scarecrow Chocolate Covered Apple

With Fall in the air and Halloween just around the corner it is time to start making all those fun seasonal treats- popcorn balls, pumpkin everything, and of course candied apples!  You have probably had caramel apples, and the red candy but if you have never had a chocolate covered apple then today is the day!!!  The delicious combination of a fresh, crisp apple and the smooth and  creamy white chocolate makes a delicious new twist on a traditional favorite treat.   But it just wasn’t enough to cover it in chocolate..I really had to Fall it up! So the scarecrow came to be, and he was a big hit with the kids!  The best part of it is that it is pretty easy to do so they can even help you make them.

Scarecrow Chocolate Covered Apple

6 apples

1 12-0z. package white chocolate chips

6 candy corn

18-24 chocolate chips

12 candy eyes

3-4 nutter butter cookies

optional: paper straws

Lay out a large enough sheet of wax or parchment paper to hold your 6 apples.

Place cookies in ziploc baggie, seal, and let  the kids pound them into smaller pieces, set aside.

Wash apples very well to remove wax and any other residue, dry thoroughly with a  clean cloth.

Remove stems from apples.

Cut wooden skewers to about 6″-7″ and  pierce into top center of apple.

Place apples in freezer while preparing chocolate. (this helps keep your chocolate from melting and pooling once covered)

Place chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and heat in 30 second increments, stirring each time until completely melted.

Use a spatula to spread melted chocolate on apple, covering well, try to smooth and make it an even thickness all the way around.

Apple Scarecrow

Place apple on waxed paper and immediately assemble his face while chocolate is still wet, as it dries it will act like a glue for all his features.  Add crushed cookies for hair/straw.

Slip a paper straw over the skewer and press into apple to add a bit more color and design to your apple.

Allow chocolate to harden- to quicken set time place in fridge.

Wrap each in plastic wrap well.

Jack O’ Lantern Treat Cups – K Cup Upcycle

These fun treat cups are not only a great way to up cycle your discarded K-cups but they are a perfect sized treat to hand out to trick or treaters, your childs classmates, or to family and neighbors.  It is easy enough that the children can  take part in creating it- how fun are handmade gifts? Drop in a battery operated tea light from the dollar store and line them up in your windows, down a walkway, hang the handles from string and make a Halloween swag, or hand individual ones from trees all over the yard. If you don’t use k cups a quick call out to friends and family on Facebook to save their leftovers will surely result in a surplus of supplies for you!

Jack O’ Lantern Treat Cups – K Cup Upcycle

Supplies Needed:

k cups

orange spray paint

black sharpie

green chenille stems

single hole punch

Peel top off k-cups and discard, dump out grounds or add them to your compost.

Wash and dry cups completely.

Slide a hole punch over the open end and make holes on each side of the cup directly across from each other, this is where your handle will go.

Take cups outside and spread out on paper, spray with one light even coat. Dry for 5 minutes, and spray with 1-2 additional coats to cover well. Dry final coat for 2 hours minimum.

k cup jack o lantern paint

Draw on facial features with black sharpie, dry for 10 minutes to avoid smudges.

Run chenille stem through hole on one side and out the other, centering it equally.  Pull up on center of chenille stem to form a handle, leaving about 3″ sticking out each side. Wrap ends up the handle a couple times then twist the end around a pencil to create a twining vine.

Fill your basket with popcorn, candy corn, carrot sticks, mms, or any other small treat that fits.

Have fun!!
